Ingredients
The key to this dish lies in selecting quality ingredients that can shine with minimal fuss. I always reach for fresh marinara sauce and good-quality cheese because they make all the difference in a slow-cooked meal. When I shop, I think about balance—simple, wholesome components that come together effortlessly, just like the meals my mum taught me to cherish. If fresh ravioli isn’t available, frozen works beautifully, too, making this recipe flexible for any pantry.
- 1 (25-ounce) jar marinara sauce (choose a chunky, flavorful variety)
- 1 (25-ounce) container frozen cheese ravioli (fresh if possible)
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup ricotta cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- Fresh basil or parsley for garnish (optional)
Substitution tip: If you want a meatier version, stir in some cooked Italian sausage or ground beef before slow cooking. For a dairy-free twist, swap mozzarella and ricotta for plant-based alternatives and ensure the ravioli fits your dietary needs.
Instructions
- Lightly grease the inside of your crockpot to prevent sticking.
- Spread a thin layer of marinara sauce on the bottom of the crockpot—this keeps the ravioli from sticking and adds flavor.
- Place half of the frozen ravioli in an even layer over the sauce.
- Dot half the ricotta cheese over the ravioli, then sprinkle half the mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses.
- Pour about half of the remaining marinara sauce evenly over the cheese layer.
- Repeat layering with the remaining ravioli, ricotta, mozzarella, Parmesan, and marinara sauce.
- Sprinkle Italian seasoning, minced garlic, salt, and pepper over the top.
- Cover and cook on low for 3 to 4 hours. Keep an eye on it around the 3-hour mark—the ravioli should be tender but not mushy.
- Once cooked, sprinkle fresh basil or parsley on top before serving for a bright pop of color and flavor.
Tip from my kitchen: Resist the urge to lift the lid too often during cooking. The slow cooker needs steady heat to meld those flavors beautifully. I learned this the hard way when a curious toddler interrupted my first slow cooker experiment!
