Learn how to make delicious Mexican Chopped Cheese Sandwich. Easy recipe with step-by-step instructions.

Ingredients

Scale

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 hoagie rolls
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup diced tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup diced onions
  • 1/4 cup chopped cilantro
  • 1 avocado, sliced
  • 1 jalapeño, sliced
  • 1 lime, cut into wedges

Feel free to substitute ground turkey for a leaner option or use Monterey Jack cheese if you prefer a milder taste. The beauty of cooking is that there’s always room for personal twists!

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon.
  2. Season the beef with smoked paprika, chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Cook until browned, about 7-10 minutes. Grandma always said to cook with your senses, so listen for the sizzle and smell the spices.
  3. Once the beef is cooked, sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the top. Cover the skillet for 2-3 minutes until the cheese is melted and gooey.
  4. While the cheese melts, toast the hoagie rolls until golden brown. I love using my trusty cast iron for this step, just like grandma did.
  5. Assemble the sandwiches by spooning the cheesy beef mixture into the toasted rolls.
  6. Top with diced tomatoes, onions, cilantro, avocado slices, and jalapeños. Squeeze a lime wedge over each sandwich for a burst of freshness.
  7. Serve immediately with a side of tortilla chips or a crisp salad.

Remember, every sandwich is unique—don’t be afraid to experiment with the toppings to suit your taste!
