Learn how to make delicious Sweet & Smoky Pineapple Brown Sugar. Easy recipe with step-by-step instructions.

Ingredients

Scale

  • 1 cup fresh pineapple, finely chopped
  • 1 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for a bit of heat)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Feel free to substitute fresh pineapple with canned pineapple if necessary, but be sure to drain it well. The smoked paprika is essential for that smoky flavor, but if you’re feeling adventurous, a pinch of chipotle powder can add a unique twist.

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the chopped pineapple and brown sugar over medium heat. Stir occasionally until the sugar dissolves and starts to caramelize, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add the smoked paprika, ground cinnamon, cayenne pepper, and salt to the saucepan. Stir well to incorporate all the spices.
  3. Continue to cook the mixture, stirring occasionally, until it thickens and the pineapple softens, about 10 more minutes.
  4. Add the lemon juice and stir one last time. The mixture should be thick and syrupy, with a beautiful golden color.
  5. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly. Transfer to a jar or airtight container for storage.

My tip for ensuring a rich, caramelized flavor is to be patient with the cooking process. Allowing the pineapple and sugar to meld together slowly creates a depth of flavor that’s simply irresistible.
